Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Little Book for Alzheimer’s Caregivers” by Celia Koudele.

The author not only worked and volunteered at the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Kansas, but also had a mother, aunt and grandmother face Dementia. In this new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, Celia Koudele shares tips for caregivers of Dementia patients.

Alzheimer’s disease is the ultimate thief, stealing memories, the ability to be independent and eventually the patient’s life. After watching her own loved ones succumb to the disease, Celia Koudele has created a new simple guide for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s, Dementia and other memory-related diseases. The book, published by Dog Ear Publishing, provides tips tested through Koudele’s first-hand knowledge and experience.

Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every 69 seconds, and it’s the only disease in the top 10 causes of death in the United States without a means of prevention or cure, Koudele notes in the preface to “The Little Book for Alzheimer’s Caregivers.” Alzheimer’s, a progressive, degenerative neurological disease, gradually destroys brain cells and affects someone’s memory, ability to make judgments, carry out basic daily tasks and communicate, she notes. The book provides a guide from big-picture things like when to place someone in a facility and take away driving privileges to small-picture activities such as reminding someone about taking a shower or bath, and how to keep someone from wandering outside.

Koudele, who writes from both her professional and personal experience with the topic, includes information on warning signs, dealing with denial, unmet physical and emotional needs, family meetings, ideas for dealing with symptoms, chapters for both caregivers and children of patients, and end-of-life decisions. A list of the author’s favorite books on Alzheimer’s and websites provides further essential resources for anyone facing this memory-robbing disease.

Author Celia Koudele worked for nine years as a family care coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Kansas in Wichita, helping more than 60 families a month. She continued to volunteer with the organization even after she no longer worked there.

There will be a book signing at the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Kansas in Wichita, Kansas on August 13, 2014 at 1820 E Douglas, 5-7 pm. Please join us for refreshments.
